Arapohue Healing & Recovery Centre

these guys are our 'whys'

Dear friends,

Arapohue Centre is like a tapestry, its rich history providing the canvas, each person bringing colour and life in their own special ways and colour and life returns to them.

We honour the Lord and the contributions of each and every person (previous owners, volunteers, guests, friends, families and tradies) who have given of their time, money and prayer... blood, sweat and tears to breathe life back into this ancient well that has always been used to help people. A place where God does the real work of recovery and life transformation in His men's hearts and souls.

All the best for 2026,
Ray, Jan and the A-team

Josh's testimony (Josh left, DJ right)

"When I was in prison I was at the end of myself and couldn't stand it anymore. I really reached out to God. "I'm really sick of my life. Please give me a sign."

I picked up my Bible for the first time and a tingling went through my whole body. It was the Holy Spirit. I started reading my Bible, then I actually heard God's audible voice speak to me. I was totally shocked.

He said,

"I am here for you now, son. Come to Me."

Later that day I was lying in bed reading my Bible and I had a quick prayer to the Lord and asked Him to give me a sign. "I am over living this lifestyle and want to live Your way and by Your will." Then I heard His audible voice speak again: "Arapohue".

I had never heard of Arapohue. I didn't know what it was or that it was even a place. The next morning first thing at unlock I ran straight to the office and I asked the officers to search up what Arapohue is. They replied and said it is a healing and recovery centre near Dargaville. I then burst out in tears to myself after that and thanked the Lord for the sign.

I got in touch with Ray and Jan and explained what my intentions were and that I was wanting to change my life and go on for the Lord. They prayed and heard the Lord say that I could come. Eventually I got an EM-bail hearing and approval to go to Arapohue Centre.

When I got here I felt like I was at home, where I was supposed to be. I met a young guy called DJ at The Lighthouse Church who has been the best friend ever. God knows we need new friends when we're starting our new life!

The Lord can change lives when we submit ourselves to Him."

Maungaraho Rock

Jan and some of the men climbed Maungaraho Rock recently at the crack of dawn to enjoy the incredible view of the Northern Wairoa river and the mighty Kaipara.

Water drama

To combat a deterioration of the water quality in one of our five camp tanks a small team of guests (you can't see Matt down in the tank) drained and water-blasted two tanks, buy 20,000 litres of town supply and sanitise all 5 tanks. Pipe improvement work was also required to the system from the tanks to the pump. Fortunately the post-pump water test is all good and no-one has had any problems at all thanks to the UV filter system. We have to recover the costs though, can you please help?

Arapohue Centre gym

Big thanks to Ruawai Community Church and all who helped fundraise and donated towards this awesome $3,500 Smith machine for the Arapohue gym. We held a garage sale and ran a Givealittle page. Gary Codlin and the Arapohue men did some hard mahi on a couple of working bees for the Church of the Nazarene in both Dargaville and Whangarei. Thanks also to Pastor Moses for this opportunity.

A great team effort to help the men keep their te whare tapa wha strong (the 4-sided house of their life). We are very grateful.

Main entrance gates to Arapohue Centre

Big thanks to resident brickie Jaime for his expertise once again (under the watchful eye of Gary Codlin) preparing the brick pillars to hold the lovely second-hand wrought iron gates Jan scored from her favourite shop, Burrell Salvage in Auckland.
